Coaches

Professional coaching allows scholars to explore themselves as an individual, a student, and a leader.

Coaching is an important part of the Health Equity Scholars Program. It allows for deep conversation and reflection that promotes personal and professional growth and development.

  • Bowman

    Lynn Bowman

    Lynn Bowman is credentialed as an Associate Certified Coach by the International Coaching Federation, and is  a graduate of the Georgetown University Executive Leadership Coaching Program. She has spent over 20 years in the educational and non-profit sector as a committed senior level administrator, consultant, leadership coach and teacher. During her tenure, she had the responsibility of training and coaching senior leaders and teams and leading several strategic initiatives. She learned what it means to build an effective team, to lead an organization through challenges and transformation and to shape vision into reality. She has extensive training in the work of racial identity development, cross racial dialogue, and transforming teams and organizations to be more equitable and inclusive. She is certified to administer the EQ-i 2.0 and EQ-i 360 emotional intelligence assessments. She draws from all of these disciplines and experiences in my coaching and consulting work. 

  • Marlina Duncan

    Marlina Duncan

    Marlina Duncan Ed.D., is vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion at UMass Chan Medical School. She is a higher education administrator and scholar, with extensive experience working on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. Prior to arriving at UMass Chan in December 2020, she served as the assistant vice president of academic diversity and associate dean of diversity initiatives in the Graduate School at Brown University. At Brown, she led initiatives to increase participation of underrepresented populations by emphasizing the importance of recruitment, retention, program climate and culture, and co-curricular programming. She was able to lay the foundation for institutionalizing diversity and inclusion best practices at the university. During her tenure at Brown University, the graduate school received more applications from historically underrepresented groups than at any other time in its history. Also, during this time, Brown admitted more underrepresented students to graduate studies and hired more faculty from underrepresented backgrounds than at any other time in the history of the institution. Duncan has an undergraduate degree in biology from Westfield State University and a doctorate in science education from UMass Amherst.

  • Gilbert

    Eldridge Gilbert

    Eldridge (El) Gilbert III is a graduate of Brown University with a Bachelor's degree in Africana Studies and Psychology. Following Brown, Eldridge joined Teach For America in Houston, TX. During his time in Houston, he earned his MBA from the Jones School of Business at Rice University. Eldridge was the Founding School Principal of YES Prep North Forest, a 6th-12th-grade school in Houston serving 850 students. After 6 years as School Principal, Eldridge transitioned to serve as the Managing Director of Schools for KIPP Bay Area Public Schools. In this role, he managed, advised, and evaluated eight School Principals across the Bay Area. Eldridge currently lives in Brooklyn and serves as the Chief Schools Officer for Coney Island Prep Schools. Eldridge formally began coaching in 2016, taking on a part-time role of Principal Success Coach for the KIPP Foundation. Over the last five years, Eldridge has had coaching clients across multiple career fields, including education, law, and health. His passion is truly helping clients uncover solutions to their challenges through coaching frameworks, asking the right questions, and encouraging clients throughout each session. In addition to coaching, El has nearly ten years of experience presenting on topics specifically related to values, leadership development, and diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the workplace. Eldridge is a Certified Professional Coach and Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner (ELI-MP). He completed a year-long coaching certification with the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) in 2019.

  • Harlam

    Alan Harlam

    Alan has been coaching for 15 years, supporting people through the various challenges they face as founders and leaders of impact-oriented organizations and companies and as they navigate transitions in their lives and careers. Alan helps his clients navigate with greater clarity and intention around what’s important to them and how they feel most alive, to live with purpose. Living purposefully is a source of meaning and a driving force for effective leadership.

    His practice developed during his tenure as the founding Director of the Social Innovation Initiative at Brown University’s Swearer Center from 2007-17. Under his leadership, Brown was a pioneer in supporting student entrepreneurs with curriculum, technical skills, funding and mentorship, with a focus on ventures designed to address social problems. His understanding of innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership were developed through his experiences in technology consulting and turnaround management.

    In addition to his leadership and personal growth coaching, he has been a lecturer in Social Entrepreneurship at Brown University, a volunteer mentor to founders through several startup accelerators, and an engaged citizen through his engagement in several non-profit boards.

    Alan received his B.S. from the Wharton School and his coaching certification from the International Coaching Federation.  He lives in Cranston, RI but spends as much time in the Colorado mountains which brings him closer to his three grown children (and their dogs). He enjoys many outdoor activities with his wife ranging from sculling on the Seekonk River, hiking and cross-country skiing in the mountains, scuba diving and adventure travels.

  • Rosario Navarro

    Rosario Navarro

    Rosario Navarro is a highly skilled educator and leadership and performance coach. Rosario has over 20 years of experience in higher education; leveraging her experience in teaching and learning to support her client’s professional and personal development. She believes clients are creative and are experts in their own lives, and her role is to create a space that facilitates awareness, reflection and transformation. Rosario holds an M.Ed. from Boston College and is working towards certification by the International Coaching Federation.
