The cohort is drawn from a pool of exceptional students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and local communities in Rhode Island. Although they come from different institutions and backgrounds, the Scholars receive the same benefits. Students entering the HES program from all three pathways work and learn together, participating in leadership development workshops, coaching, program events, and other activities.

Tuition and other financial support provided are based on need, and includes coverage of fees (exclusive of health insurance).
An optional RAship in the student’s area of interest allows the Scholars to build connections to Brown faculty and to gain valuable research experience.
Scholars are eligible for up to $5000 in stipend support if their choice of a summer internship is either unpaid or underpaid.
Each HES student is paired with two mentors, drawn from the ranks of public health leadership, to provide Scholars with guidance and support as they launch their careers.
HES students work with a coach to help them define their personal and professional goals and create a personalized plan for leadership development.
Bi-weekly interactive sessions led by Brown faculty and other experts address communication negotiation, leading teams, crisis management, and other essential leadership skills.
Through career panels, events, and an annual gathering of Scholars and mentors, the HES students grow their professional connections, creating a network that will support them and uplift future leaders.
A kick-off retreat in September brings the full HES cohort together to create a supportive community to aid in the transition to graduate school.
